Ubuntu, Do you need antivirus,firewall software ?

As you can probably tell I am a Windows user but Ive seen how good Ubuntu is and I decided to give it a go on a spare PC of mine.


Ive got it all installed,which used up some of the old grey matter.


I am however most impressed, especially seeing as its free.


Now to get back to my question.


I have heard you dont need antivirus software, firewall etc. with Linux. Is this true ?


If I do need to install some kind of security, could someone be so kind to point me in the right direction.

If you're paranoid, go to the add or remove programs thing. And search ''virus scanner''


Also, don't log on as ROOT (administrator) when you don't have to. You're extremely unlikely to get a virus though

Need Help.... Antivirus & spyware (Infections)?

Just put my daughters computer on the internet. I thought it had antivirus, however had obviously expired. Yes i believe we got some viruses a worm and not shaw what else. Installed AVG Free Edition %26 ran a scan %26 picked up about six viruses that are now in the Vault. Are there other things i should do because i don't think it is running 100%. I was getting all these text boxes opening from the tool bar, system security alert download now. However every time i would try the page could not be displayed. Seriously need some help %26 the programs i require need to be FREE as it is only my daughters computer. Although i want to get it cleaned up for her as we all know it's painfull when this crap gets in. Please help a desperate father.

Hi! I am a descent computer user, meaning I know how to mod computers, and I know how to remove spywares, I know how to fiddle with regestry etc. But I have to know this. I know that most antivirus programs confilict with each other when you are running them at the same time. (Meaning running real-time protection at the same time.) I know that they conflict, but one time, I installed two antivirus programs at once, and I had no touble with them. (Antivir and AVG free Edition.) I know that there should be a conflict between these two, (well theoradically...) but I know seen no problems at all. It is ok to run both of them at the same time? (Maybe more protection???)

It is possible that 2 AV programs running live scans at the same time can cause your computer to crash. They see each other as a threat, try to eliminate each other, and go into an endless loop. It doesn't always happen but it could. (Personal experience showed me this to be true.)

Two Antivirus?

I have the SBC antivirus but it doesn't really do much and doesn't delete my viruses so I downloaded a free one, but when I was installing it it said that having two antiviruses could create system problems. I don't really want to uninstall the sbcone, but is it safe to install the new one. The new one is called bitdefender antiviris if that helps. Also, do you think I'd be better off going to a store and getting one. The viruses that I have don't sem to be doing much, but I'd like to get rid of them anyway.

The 2 scanning engines will fight each other to scan every file that you read, write or execute which can cause a slowdown. For the same reason, using 2 A-Vs can cause you to have less protection from the various malware, not more.

You might consider choosing just one A-V and removing any others.

your net connection is blocked probably because you told zone alarm somehow, somewhere to block it in certain cases.

u can use comodo firewall pro.
Windows firewall is enough to protect you, if u want another firewall, u have to disable windows firewall first otherwise they will be conflicting each other and you will face another problem.

You can search the whole web for a free software (like zonal alarm) but then if you are working on a office network then you have to configure your firewall to access on the office network, if your pc is used at home and not connected to any network u dont require any configuration.

For antiviruses (Mcafee or norton or other), if they are not having inbuilt firewall, they will not be interfering with any other seperate firewall programs. But if they do have (like their internet security versions) they will be interfering anywith any other seperate firewall programs. In that case you dont even need other seperate firewall programs.

When trying to instal ANY antivirus (kaspersky, avg(wich was installed and suddenly dissapeared)) installation stops and there is error: cant open ..... file, and it doesnt want to continue.....

I now that it is some kind of virus but how to remove it....?

Use an online scanner to check your computer. Hopefully the scanner can remove it. If it can't, here's how to manually remove it:

I have an antivirus software that i didnt install. I dont even know where it came from. Nobody else uses this computer. I was just using my computer one day and then a program i didnt install started checking my computer. Just a few minutes ago, I let the scan run. It said I had Trojan! If you use a limited user account, then the damage is contained to that account only, and can be easily detected and removed by logging into administrative account.

Do a reinstall of the program and choose the repair option, then you will have to update after installing.
I have AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 and it's set to update automatically. After a few months it stopped doing this and I didn't change the settings. I'm updating manually right now and am going to e-mail their technical support. I wish I could help you out because this is frustrating. Hope someone else has the answer for you.

Norton Antivirus Problem?

i have norton antivirs 2003. i just installed it, i skipped tre registration becuase it says that i get 90 days free. and i did. so i updated it untill it said it has no mroe updates to download, i updated my computer as well. and yet i get this bubble that says ''Norton Antivirus is Installed but the status is unknown'' its a litle red shield with a white ''x'' in the center. when i open norton it says the status is ''ok''.

AVG antivirus program help?

I have AVG antivirus.

It was working fine for a few months, then upon one update (this evening) told me it needed to restart. I restarted my computer by clicking the ''Yes'' button.

When my PC had restarted, I got the following message:

''Unfinished update of AVG Free Edition has been detected. To finish the Update process, it is necessary to restart the computer now.

Do you want to restart the computer now?''

At which point I am given the choice ''Yes'' or ''No''. When I click ''No'' I have to protection and my computer freaks out. When I click ''Yes'' my computer restarts, but I get exactly the same message AGAIN. It is a vicious loop someone save me.

I think you should have used AVG Antivirus Free Edition. Ut doesn't delete the file if you don't want to, but it sets it into a quarantine.

most Antivirus programs first attempt to clean the file, then delete the file is cleaning fails, and if it cannot be deleted it is quarantined. I believe Norton operates in that fashion. A good free Anti Virus is the AVG Free Edition AntiVirus.
Norton and AVG are terrible anti-viruses. Norton blocks everything and AVG does basically nothing. Use NOD32.

Simple answer to this one: Use AVG Free instead of McAfee. I have McAfee VirusScan installed on my computer downstairs and AVG upstairs, and I've seen little difference (though I like both better than Norton). Both programs are detected by Windows and work very well.

All the companies I work for use Norton. I find it to be a good program that allows little delay in the usage of the PC's. Also, you can control each computer if you choose to from the server (i.e., updates). Lastly, be aware that you will need to by individual licenses for each computer. You will find that the server software is known as symantec (the makers of Norton). As for free software, you get ehat you pay for. But once again, when using a server for a business, it may be better to pay for a service that provides the protection that you need.

I personally think you should use Windows Live OneCare.

It's easy to use, it works quite well, and I've had no problems with it. It's also pretty cheap at some places. Like I heard Sam's Club sells them for $11 and stuff like that. The most highest retail price is $49.

It has a nice UI, easy to use and understand, and it just works. Really. They've improved it a bit, and right now there's a 2.0 beta going around that really improves OneCare a bit.

AVG its free and good.
You can do either of two things. Get a free one from your server - after all you are paying to be on the Internet, and they do provide protection for your computer. It is usually with the bundle you pay for. I have Shaw.ca and there protection package is great. but if you use it and you are not with Shaw service then it will cost around $100. But check your provider first. Or you can go to the site below.

You should be fine... But... Don't use System Mechanic anti virus as it will conflict with Norton.

You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.

Problem with Avast Antivirus?

I downloaded the free edition of Avast but then it seemed to cause some of my programs to shut down. I decided to unistall it, but then I couldn't find the setup utility. I tried every program I had to get rid of it and in the end I just deleted all the files from program files and cleaned the registry.

Anyways, later on I got a virus that wouldn't let me open my other antivirus and I ended up reseting my operating system.

Have you ever found a program with a missing uninstallation utility? Should I just have used the original setup file to uninstall the program? What should I do if I decide to try Avast again and there's no uninstallation program?

First problem. You appear to have had TWO Anti-virus programs running at the same time. This never works because each Anti-virus thinks the other IS a virus. And this may also explain why the original Avast un-install failed. Second problem, you tried to remove Avast manually. This requires expert skills.

So, download Avast again, but do not install it yet. Then, re-boot your PC in Safe Mode. And, using Add / Remove programs, un-install it, then re-boot normally and all should be well.

TIP: As counter-intuitive as this sounds, it actually works.

I currently have these tools: ZoneAlarm Security Suite, ThreatFire, Windows Defender, Ad-Aware 2007, Advanced WindowsCare V2 Personal, CCleaner, RegCure, Spybot - Search %26 Destroy, SpywareBlaster, TuneUp Utilities 2008, and lastly Zappit!. The problem is I know I don't need all those tools for my computer to keep it free from the threats of the internet, so I'm asking you for your help so I can uninstall most of those program for something better, and more efficient. I need it to work with Windows XP, and like I said above need the program, or programs to work well. I'm also looking for something to fix my registry other than RegCure. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. AVG is one of the best AV programs out there.

It has a foot print of less than 50MB. Some claim that task manager only reports an increase of 2MB total RAM space increase after installation.

As I have not researched what background services are running, I am not prepared to lay claim to that bold statement. However, it's not very resource hungry and unless it's scanning you will never know it's there.

Best of all...free. No bloatware, just a simple AV that is very effective.

I only recommend BitDefender and any AV built around the kaspersky engine otherwise. You normally pay for these.

Beware of running free online software. I got a worm borer by doing this and it eventually took down my whole system. Run your regular softwear to detect anything wrong and use that as your tool. Never use anything off the Internet. If you don't have up to date product for viruses and such, go to office supply or such and buy it. Please...not on line.

The one that attached itself to my system was called Bullet Proof and it took me down. My computer had to go in the shop for recovery to the tune of $90.00. We now have McAfee. It's great!

Alright, I just download a LiveUpdate thing, and when I restarted my computer, it said 'my free trial period has ended'. I tried activating the program with the program key that I found on my computer, but it doesn't work.

It says ''There is a problem with your activation key'

I do not have the CD for the program, because we bought the computer with the program installed already. What should I do?

Try to use Spybot S%26D(free antispyware), and AVG or NOD32 antivirus. I'm using NOD32 and Spybot for few years and never had any damage on my comp.
It cannot accept the product key because the software's free trial period has ended, and you cannot update until you renew your subscription with Norton.
There is a difference between a Product/Program Key (and other aliases) which you might find on the 'About' page of a program, and an activation key. As a rule, activation keys do not remain stored.

I've been using Panda Security for a couple years now, and it seems to work well. It has the antivirus, firewall, and spyware protection, among other things. Best thing to do is read the articles from Consumer Reports magazine. It's how I found Panda. You can go to the library and read some of the back issues.
The only antivirus programs you can buy in stores are Norton Anti-Virus and McAfee.

Well, if you really want yours computer to be protected, then you have to know couple of important things.

First of all, stay away from anything that is free when it comes (to spyware and antivirus. There is a reason why they free. They are not good.

Second, to protect your pc, you'd need not one but at least three programs: an anti-virus, an anti spyware and a firewall. There are ways to bypass this but it is illegal :P

You can remove all the Registeries etc to get rid of the history, by going in to regedit, which you can locate by going in to Start%26gt;Run and type in regedit.

This still won't work but there is software that will remove the rest of it.

It's either that method, or find a crack on the internet.

I have had major problems with spyware/viruses since yesterday late afternoon.

I have since updated my macfee antivirus and checked for viruses deleting some unwanted items. I have gone though my settings and increased my security, deleted/stopped cookies, stopped mirosoft messenger. I have installed yahoo toolbar with anti-spy and pop up blocker. I have installed free spybot.

All seems fine now as I was getting lots of warning and advert pop ups telling me to buy software. I do not have any pop ups now.

I read that if you do not 'buy' an anti-spy software and you use free software you should use two free ones rather than one so it is more cover. Is yahoo anti-spy and spybot enough or should I get something else.
