Ubuntu, Do you need antivirus, firewall software ?

As you can probably tell I am a Windows user but Ive seen how good Ubuntu is and I decided to give it a go on a spare PC of mine.

Ive got it all installed, which used up some of the old grey matter.

I am however most impressed, especially seeing as its free.

Now to get back to my question.

I have heard you dont need antivirus software, firewall etc. with Linux. Is this true ?

If I do need to install some kind of security, could someone be so kind to point me in the right direction.

Many Thanks.

anti virus

You're highly unlikely to get a virus in linux. Here is a list of Linux viruses:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Lin...

If you compare that to the amount of viruses targeted at windows, it's nothing.

If you're paranoid, go to the add or remove programs thing. And search ''virus scanner''

Also, don't log on as ROOT (administrator) when you don't have to. You're extremely unlikely to get a virus though

Kudos on a successful start!

Do all this

Clean Up Computer

===============

Download and run superantispyware. I was put onto this program because of an annoying popup (XP)

http://www.superantispyware.com

Superantispyware is a good program and remember to update it before scanning. A scan may take 45mins.

afterwards clean up the registry with this

Clean up pc and IE

To clean up run this Microsoft鈥檚 windows live program. It does registry, spyware , virus , disk clean up and defrag

it takes 2 hours or more so once it starts to scan (go to bed etc)

Is it ok to run two antivirus software at once?

Hi! I am a descent computer user, meaning I know how to mod computers, and I know how to remove spywares, I know how to fiddle with regestry etc. But I have to know this. I know that most antivirus programs confilict with each other when you are running them at the same time. (Meaning running real-time protection at the same time.) I know that they conflict, but one time, I installed two antivirus programs at once, and I had no touble with them. (Antivir and AVG free Edition.) I know that there should be a conflict between these two, (well theoradically...) but I know seen no problems at all. It is ok to run both of them at the same time? (Maybe more protection???)

Avast and AVG run ok together. AVG and Antivir run ok together. Avast and Antivir have a small confliction however.

It is said that if you try running two anti-virus softwares, damage could result for your computer. However, if you try installing one software system while another already exists on your computer, most programs wont allow you to. You have to pick one or the other. Choose Norton though, its what I like. Btw, anti-virus software is only highly effective when updated regularly, no matter how many ones you have.
You already know, so, if you want to run two then go ahead. It's your computer.
no only ur computer speed will be slow nothing more protection against virus with 2 antivirus at a same time
It is possible that 2 AV programs running live scans at the same time can cause your computer to crash. They see each other as a threat, try to eliminate each other, and go into an endless loop. It doesn't always happen but it could. (Personal experience showed me this to be true.)

Two Antivirus?

I have the SBC antivirus but it doesn't really do much and doesn't delete my viruses so I downloaded a free one, but when I was installing it it said that having two antiviruses could create system problems. I don't really want to uninstall the sbcone, but is it safe to install the new one. The new one is called bitdefender antiviris if that helps. Also, do you think I'd be better off going to a store and getting one. The viruses that I have don't sem to be doing much, but I'd like to get rid of them anyway.

Two Antivirus?antivirus downloads

The use of 2 or more anti-virus programs at the same time can cause major conflicts. The 2 scanning engines will fight each other to scan every file that you read, write or execute which can cause a slowdown. For the same reason, using 2 A-Vs can cause you to have less protection from the various malware, not more.

(Using an anti-spyware with an anti-virus is good, however and is recommended)

You might consider choosing just one A-V and removing any others.

The free version of BitDefender has no real-time resident protection, only the paid-for version does. The free version is an on-demand scanner only.

There are much better free alternatives such as Avria Anti-Vir:

and Avast:

Good luck.

Only use one antivirus.

I have 17 years computer systems and software development experience and do computer repair professionally. I have been using Antivir for 7 years now and it is totally free. It doesn't slow your computer down and it updates itself automatically every day.

Avira Antivirus?antivirus programs

Active Virus Shield provided by AOL and Kaspersky Labs is one of the best. Kaspersky has a 99.57% detection rate. Avira has about 85 and AVG about 82. You can get it at http://www.activevirusshield.com

  • Free firewall?

    hi

i use windows xp, have dsl net (2 mb/sec), i have avast antivirus, i want to know if a firewall is necessary, because everytime i activate zonealarm , free version ,it ends up blocking my internet connection, i cannot surf, it works for some time then againit gets blocked , inspite of my isp ip address being in trusted zone,in addition zonealarm is huge about 10 mb , and they remind me of updates which r 16 mb, also tried jetsico, can u recommend a good, free , low size, less irritating, firewall, it should be free and just do what a firewall does but silently, not block my net connections !!, i have avasti antivurus its free but still works so well !!

    Free firewall?antivirus protection

You are correct. ZoneAlarm will slow down the connection you have to the net. Best free firewall to go with is comodo.

    Free firewall?computer repair

sygate personal firewall but it is no longer updated.

the most important thing to do is, anyway, learn the basic function of firewalls, since they all work the same way.

your net connection is blocked probably because you told zone alarm somehow, somewhere to block it in certain cases.

firewall are like every other computer programs: if you don't know them, they hardly do what they have to.
i use AVG and its free
You should try Comodo Firewall. It has a learning mode thats easy to understand. The first time an app tries to connect to the internet it will ask you to allow or deny it. You can check a box before you allow or deny to make a rule to always use that answer when that app connects. It is the best firewall available and it's free:

    Free firewall for pc?????????????

Kindly tell me the name and website from where i can download free firewall for my pc. please also tell me that whether i can use it with McAfee antivirus installed.

isn't it interfere with antivirus software already installed

    Free firewall for pc?????????????antivirus scan

Why don't you try Zone Alarm firewall. I guess this is the most popular firewall for home users. Just google for ZoneAlarm and then download their basic version (it's free).

    Free firewall for pc?????????????computer security

    http://www.iopus.com/guides/free-firewal...

here is the link go and u will find list of free firewall and their download link. njoy
I will recommend Comodo Personal Firewall. It's the best firewall one can possibly get, and it's free too. It does a great jodb protecting your computer.

    http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/
fren, if you get free firewell, pls tell me also.
    Zone Alarm is Good

    http://www.download.com/ZoneAlarm-Window...

.But B4 U Install ZoneAlarm Disable the Windows Firewall first...
u can use comodo firewall pro.
Windows firewall is enough to protect you, if u want another firewall, u have to disable windows firewall first otherwise they will be conflicting each other and you will face another problem.

You can search the whole web for a free software (like zonal alarm) but then if you are working on a office network then you have to configure your firewall to access on the office network, if your pc is used at home and not connected to any network u dont require any configuration.

For antiviruses (Mcafee or norton or other), if they are not having inbuilt firewall, they will not be interfering with any other seperate firewall programs. But if they do have (like their internet security versions) they will be interfering anywith any other seperate firewall programs. In that case you dont even need other seperate firewall programs.
